Ground Breaking officially was celebrated on September 25, 2007. From that, excavators worked on the site through until January to cut and fill the 400 m track. Volunteers worked to make ice after that to hold various events throughout the winter.

On May 10, 2008, over 200 people participated in the 4th Annual Lakefield 5K ~ Run the River. The event raised over $3200 for the Oval project. February 15, 2008 was a magical evening as hundreds of candles lined the track for a candle light skate. There were complimentry hot dogs and hot chocolate and a cozy fire to take the chill off.
